How to organize your holiday decorations to make next year’s decorating process a simple one.

How to organize your holiday decorations to make next year's decorating process a simple one

Was your holiday season a merry one?  I hope it was filled with festive beauty, some relaxation, good food, and good conversation.  Are you ready to turn the page and begin the first chapter of the New Year?  First, it’s time to take down the holiday decorations and return your home back to a level of ‘normalcy’, however you define it.  My tips for this process are short and sweet.

  • Take down all of the holiday decorations and gather them all together in one space.  If you did not use all of the holiday decorations that you own for the season, take the rest out of storage too and add them to the items you just took down.

  • Review your full collection of holiday decorations.  Use this time as an opportunity to decide if you can pare down your collection, especially if you did not use all of the items you own this year (why didn’t you?).  Keep only those items that you truly love and treasure.  The rest can be donated, sold or discarded.

  • Now that you know what you are planning to keep, is there anything that is in need of repair or replacing?  If so, take care of it now, before you put them away.  ‘After holiday sales’ are a great opportunity to purchase replacement items (strings of holiday lights are just one of many ideas that come to mind here).

  • If you have outside decorations in addition to inside decorations, store the outside decorations in their own separate container(s) and be sure to label the container(s) appropriately so they are easy to locate next year.  QUICK TIP:  Wrap each string of lights around a piece of cardboard to prevent them from becoming a tangled mess within the storage container.  It will save you a lot of time and stress next year!

  • As for the inside decorations, do you only decorate one room in your home or do you decorate multiple rooms in your home?  If you decorate multiple rooms in your home, then I would recommend storing each room’s decorations in their own container and label each container by room.  If you only decorate one room in your home, then I would recommend containerizing the decorations by zones within the room (tree, mantel, etc.), and label the containers accordingly.

Voila!  Your holiday decorations are now organized, containerized, labeled and ready to store until next year!

I hope you found these tips to be helpful!  Thank you again for stopping by and Thank you for organizing with me!
